Looking for a desirable timber species? Consider Eucalyptus viminalis, also known as Manna Gum, Ribbon Gum or White Gum. This straight erect tree, often towering at 130 feet tall, is native to cooler areas of Australia and its leaves are koalas' favourite food. Its pale pink to pinkish brown timber is easy to work with making it attractive in furniture applications. Although its low strength and durability limits its structural uses, some are still found in seasoned and unseasoned house framing. The bark of this tree produces a sweet, pleasant-tasting manna, a white crumbly substance that is enjoyed by not only aborigines but also the locals. Its sap is also an essential food source for arboreal mammals like yellow-bellied, sugar and other gliders. E. viminalis is hardy to a temperature of -15 °C or more, making it suitable for planting in Europe. In addition to timber, this tree has been used by Indigenous Australians to make shields and wooden bowls. In short, Eucalyptus viminalis is a versatile species with a lot of character.
