Ericameria nauseosa var. speciosa, also known as Gray Rabbitbrush, Rubber Rabbitbrush, or Showy Rabbitbrush, is a popular xeriscaping shrub in arid regions of Western North America. This shrub produces pungent-smelling, golden-yellow flowers in late summer and early fall, attracting browsing wildlife on winter ranges. The flexible, rubbery stems and greenish-gray leaves with a soft, felt-like covering make for an attractive addition to any landscape. The Zuni tribe use the blossoms to make a yellow dye and the stems to make baskets. Rubber Rabbitbrush was studied as a source of hypoallergenic rubber for people who suffer from latex allergies. In addition to its ornamental value, Rabbitbrush holds potential for biomaterial and bioenergy uses. Thriving in coarse, alkaline soils common to desert environments, this shrub is an excellent choice for water-conservation landscaping.
