Cornus sessilis, also known as Blackfruit Cornel, Blackfruit Dogwood, and Miner's Dogwood, is a shrub or small tree native to northern California. It is commonly found along streambanks in the Cascades, Sierra Nevada, and the coastal mountain ranges. This deciduous plant features deeply-veined, oval green leaves that turn red before falling. Its tiny greenish-yellow flowers are surrounded by thick, pointed bracts, and its round, white fruit gradually turns shiny black, which attracts many birds. The fully ripe fruit is quite pleasant and can be eaten raw or cooked, but slightly astringent. This dogwood can reach up to five meters in height and is a great addition to any garden or landscape.
