Cornus canadensis, also known as Bunchberry or Bunchberry Dogwood, is a slow-growing perennial herbaceous subshrub that forms a dense carpet-like mat. The plant is a native of Northern China, far eastern Russia, Japan and North America, and grows well in light woodland areas. It takes a little while to settle down but becomes rampant when established and can then spread up to 3 ft per year. The plant has white flowers that bloom in late spring to midsummer, large showy white bracts, and its fruits look like berries but are drupes. The drupes are green, but turn bright red at maturity in late summer, and are edible with a mild flavor. Cornus canadensis is a great dense ground cover plant that is attractive and requires cool moist soils to thrive. Try it out today!
