Introducing Centaurea americana, also known as American Starthistle or American Basketflower. This stunning annual is native to the southern central United States and northeastern Mexico and looks similar to thistles but lacks their prickly characteristics. The plant can grow up to 5-6 feet tall with rough 4-inch long lance-shaped leaves and showcases beautiful lavender-pink, filamentous flower heads with cream-colored centers from May until June. The name basket flower refers to the stiff, straw-colored bracts just beneath the flower head, which are divided at the tip into long, sharp teeth. This plant is often cultivated for its showy flowers and can sometimes be found outside of its native range as an escape from cultivation. Don't miss out on the opportunity to add this breathtaking flower to your garden.
