Carya tomentosa, commonly known as Mockernut Hickory, is a sturdy and long-lived tree that is the most abundant of the hickories. It can reach the age of 500 years and its wood is highly valued for its strength, hardness, and flexibility. This tree is also an excellent source of fuelwood. Native to the region from Massachusetts to Florida and Texas, it has scaly dark gray bark and an open habit. It produces nearly round, hard-shelled, edible nuts. With a moderate lifespan, Carya tomentosa is adapted to coarse, fine, and medium textured soils and has medium drought tolerance and shade tolerance. This tree is perfect for lumber, pulpwood, and veneer production, as well as for fuelwood and naval store product. Plant this beautiful and distinguished tree seed today!
