Introducing Carya aquatica, also known as Bitter Pecan or Water Hickory! This large tree, which can grow over 100 ft tall, belongs to the Juglandaceae family and is a dominant species found on clay flats and backwater areas near streams and rivers in the American South. It is a major component of wetland forests, due to the selective cutting of more desirable tree species for the lumber industry. The tree is also important for cleansing drainage waters because it slows water flow during flooding, allowing segments to fall out of the water column. Water Hickory is tolerant of wet soils, but grows best on well-draining soils near waterways. The wood is heavy and close-grained but soft and brittle, making it ideal for fencing and as a fuel. Choose Carya aquatica for a striking tree that delivers both beauty and practicality.
