Carpinus betulus, European Hornbeam or Hornbeam, is a beautiful addition to any garden or park. As described by Dirr, it is one of the very finest small landscape trees. This shade-loving tree prefers moderate soil fertility and moisture and can be grown as a medium to tall hedge, with retention of dead leaves throughout winter when clipped once a year in late summer. The wood of this tree is hard, tough, and durable, making it perfect for flooring, cogs, tools, and piano mechanisms. The bark of Carpinus betulus can be used to make a yellow dye.

Native to western, central, and southern England and growing up to 600 meters, Carpinus betulus is a slow-growing, medium-sized tree with steel-gray smooth bark, which is a welcome addition to the winter landscape. Its dark green leaves turn yellow in the fall and are of an upright habit when fully grown. In some areas, it grows in mixed stands with oak and beech and is common in scree forests.

Carpinus betulus also has medicinal properties; its leaves are haemostatic and can be used to stop bleeding, heal wounds, and as an eye lotion. It is even used in Bach flower remedies for ailments such as tiredness, weariness, and physical exhaustion.

Overall, Carpinus betulus is a stunning tree that not only adds beauty to any landscape but also has practical uses and medicinal benefits. Its resistance to cutting back and dense foliage make it a perfect option for tall hedges and topiary. With proper maintenance, this tree can thrive in any garden or park. Fresh seeds require only a period of cold stratification for optimum growth.
