Arctostaphylos nevadensis, also known as pinemat manzanita, is a beautiful shrub native to the western region of North America, from Washington to California. It can be found in coniferous forests of both inland and coastal mountain ranges, where it is a dominant understory species. This short, spreading shrub with shiny, bright green leaves produces beautiful, whitish manzanita flowers in spherical clusters and small, spherical drupe fruits that measure about 7 millimeters in width. Pinemat manzanita is used for stabilizing soil against erosion on mountain slopes, and is also cultivated as an ornamental plant in chaparral landscaping. Its fruits can be eaten fresh or dried for later use, and even pulverized into a powder for use in soups or drinks. Pinemat manzanita is a great addition to any garden and can add a beautiful pop of green to any landscape.
