Introducing the unique Araucaria columnaris x heterophylla Cook Pine, also known as the Coral reef araucaria, New Caledonia pine, Cook araucaria, or columnar araucaria. Originally classified by botanists on Captain James Cook's second voyage of exploration, this species of conifer is endemic to New Caledonia in the southwestern Pacific. It is a distinctive and narrow cone-shaped tree that can reach up to 60 meters tall in its native habit. However, it is commonly grown as an ornamental tree and street tree in warm temperate climates. Its relatively short, mostly horizontal branches are in whorls around the slender, upright to slightly leaning trunk. The branchlets are lined with small, green, incurved, point-tipped, spirally arranged, overlapping leaves and the female cones are scaly, egg-shaped, and up to 15 cm long. Grow this distinctive and unique species in Zones 9-11 or as a container/tub plant, typically in the 3-6' tall range. Enjoy a beautiful and long-lasting addition to your garden or landscape.
