Amorpha canescens, also known as Lead Plant or Leadplant Amorpha, is a versatile and resilient shrub native to North America. It has very small purple flowers grouped in racemes and compound leaves with a leaden appearance due to their dense hairiness. This plant can grow up to 4 feet tall and has an extensive root system that can extend over 15 feet deep. It is adaptable to well-drained soils of prairies, bluffs, and open woodlands and is wind resistant, making it an excellent choice for windbreaks and soil erosion prevention. Additionally, it contains 'amorpha', a contact and stomachic insecticide and repellent. Its blooming period occurs from early to mid-summer and lasts for about 3 weeks, making it an attractive addition to any garden or landscape. Overall, Amorpha canescens is a low maintenance and hardy plant that is well suited for a variety of environments and purposes.
