Acacia erioloba, also known as Camel Thorn, Kameeldoring, Giraffe Thorn or Mokala, is a magnificent tree native to tropical Africa, specifically the drier regions of Southern Africa. It can grow up to 17 meters in height and is slow-growing, hardy to drought and fairly frost-resistant. This tree is named after giraffes, as they commonly graze on its hard-to-reach succulent leaves that are usually out of reach of smaller animals. It also has ear-shaped pods, which are favored by numerous herbivores including cattle. The wood of Acacia erioloba is a dark reddish-brown color and is extremely dense and strong. Unfortunately, it is also a good fuel, which leads to the widespread clearing of dead trees and the felling of healthy ones. According to superstition, lightning will strike at A. erioloba more readily than other trees. This tree is also interestingly used as a substitute for coffee beans, as its seeds can be roasted. The Mokala National Park in the Northern Cape is even named after this majestic tree, making it all the more significant. Order your very own Camel Thorn and let it bring the wonder of African nature into your own backyard.
