The Abies magnifica, known as the California Red Fir or simply Red Fir, is a beautiful large evergreen tree, reaching up to 120-180 ft m in height and boasting a 6 ft trunk diameter. This slow-growing, long-lived tree thrives in cool, moist, heavy clay soils, and shade. The Red Fir is very ornamental, yet resilient, withstanding atmospheric pollution and acid conditions. It is especially suited to north-facing slopes. The tree produces a wealth of seeds every 2-3 years, establishing a new generation from the age of 25. Early planting is recommended for optimal development and resistance against wind damage. The Red Fir is a fire-resistant species, characterized by its dark green foliage and brown flowers. The fruit/seed is also brown and noticeable to the observer. Besides its aesthetic function, the Abies magnifica serves as Christmas tree and lumber. As a high altitude tree, it prospers at 4,500-9,000 ft altitude. The name Red Fir derives from the distinct bark color of aged trees.
