Discover the beauty and versatility of the Abies concolor ssp. concolor or Concolor Fir, also known as the White Fir. Appreciated for its ornamental value and as a popular Christmas tree, the Concolor fir grows well on a north-facing slope, in heavy clay soil, and even poor dry sites, showing exceptional resilience to atmospheric pollution. Keep in mind, though, that they prefer slightly acidic conditions, and a soil that is moist but not overly waterlogged.
One of its unique features is its strong lemony scent when its leaves are crushed. Interestingly, its wood is odorless, making it suitable for crafting food storage tubs that don't affect the flavor of stored items. The tree's needle-like leaves are green to blue-green, and it produces barrel-shaped cones that disintegrate to release the seeds.
Graceful yet robust, these trees can reach impressive heights of up to 150 ft. In terms of maintenance, they have good needle retention and their lower branches can self-prune, lending character to the tree as it matures. Beware of potential threats such as mistletoe and bark beetles that can cause damage.
In addition to its aesthetic appeal, it is also a source of food for wildlife such as deer, porcupines, squirrels, and grouse. Join us in environmentally conscious efforts by planting this beautiful, multi-purpose tree. We recommend planting when the trees are relatively small, between 1-3 ft in height for optimum growth and wind resistance.
