Abies concolor ssp. concolor, also referred to as Concolor Fir or White Fir, is a popular ornamental landscaping tree and Christmas tree. The Kaibab Arizona source displays a lovely blue color and is recommended for zones 6 and 7. These trees prefer moist, but not waterlogged soil and can grow well in heavy clay soils. They are shade tolerant, but growth is slower in denser shade. This evergreen tree produces needle-like leaves with a lemony scent and spire-like crown with a straight trunk. The crushed leaves have a strong lemony scent and are slightly notched to bluntly pointed. It is intolerant of atmospheric pollution and prefers slightly acidic soil conditions. White Fir is important to many species of wildlife, as they feast on its buds, leaves, and seeds. It may reach a height of 130-150 ft. and produce mature, barrel-shaped cones in early fall. White Fir is perfect as an ornamental tree and is widely planted throughout North America.
