Acer platanoides, also known as the Norway Maple or Harlequin Maple, is a stunning deciduous tree native to eastern and central Europe and western Asia. Growing up to 100 ft tall with a broad, rounded crown, it is favored for its tall trunk and tolerance of poor, compacted soils and urban pollution. The tree tends to grow out leaves earlier than most maples and holds its leaves somewhat longer in autumn, with dark green leaves turning rich yellow in fall. Its tough nature and pollution-resistance make it a popular choice for ornamental planting and street trees in many North American cities. The sap of the Norway Maple tree also contains sugar and can be used as a drink or concentrated into a syrup for use as a sweetener on many foods. With its versatility and striking appearance, the Acer platanoides is a valuable addition to any landscape.
