, also known as English Ivy, is a beautiful evergreen climbing plant that can grow up to 30 meters high on suitable surfaces like trees, walls, and cliffs. It also grows as ground cover where no vertical surfaces are present. The plant has aerial rootlets that cling to the substrate, making it easy to climb. Juvenile leaves are palmately lobed and grow on creeping and climbing stems, while adult unlobed cordate leaves grow on fertile flowering stems exposed to full sun, high in the crowns of trees. Hedera helix is approved for cough and bronchitis by the German Commission E Monographs. While the plant is native to most of Europe and western Asia, it is labeled as an invasive species in many areas, such as Oregon and parts of the eastern United States. However, it is also cultivated as an ornamental plant and widely used to cover walls due to its ability to cool the interior in summer and provide insulation in winter. Hedera helix also attracts wildlife and is visited by over 70 species of nectar-feeding insects. Nonetheless, careful planning and placement are essential as the fast-growing ivy can cause damage to brickwork and hide structural faults. Ivy extracts are part of current cough medicines, and in the past, the leaves and berries were taken orally as an expectorant to treat cough and bronchitis. If you are considering using Hedera helix, careful planning and management are recommended.
