Ephedra viridis, also known as green ephedra or green Mormon tea, is a drought-resistant perennial shrub native to the Western United States. Its bright green twigs and jointed stems of thick dark green make for a beautiful ornamental addition to rock gardens. Ephedra viridis is also used in seed mixes to successfully re-vegetate ranges in mountain shrub areas. Aside from its ornamental purposes, the shrub has also been used to make tea by boiling the stems, with the tea having antidepressant and decongestant properties. Green ephedra is known to provide cover for small birds and mammals and is capable of sprouting vigorously from surviving roots and root crowns after fires.
