Introducing the Davidia involucrata, also known as the Dove Tree, Ghost Tree, Handkerchief Tree, and Laundry Tree. This medium-sized deciduous tree is a sight to behold with its broad pyramidal habit, resembling a linden. Originally from woodlands in central China, the Dove Tree was introduced to Europe and North America in 1904 and has since become a popular ornamental tree in parks and larger gardens. The white bracts, the size of a dove (8" x 4"), are the showy parts of the bloom and flutter in the slightest breeze, resembling white doves sitting in the tree from a distance, hence the common name. It may take 10 or more years to flower, but it's worth the wait. Toothed, bright green leaves are heart-shaped at the base, and variable fall color ranges from undistinguished pastels to bright oranges and reds. Genus Davidia was named after Father Armand David, a French Vincentian missionary and keen naturalist who lived in China. Get ready to add a stunning centerpiece to your garden with the Dove Tree.
