Alnus japonica, also known as East Asian alder, is a beautiful deciduous tree that can grow up to 72 feet tall at a fast rate. Native to northeastern Asia and Japan, it prefers temperate forests, stream-banks, swamps, and roadsides. This tree has narrow, acuminate, serrulate, ovate to elliptic dark green leaves, which turn light green underneath. It bears long, pendant, yellow-brown catkins in clusters during the spring months, with female catkins producing ellipsoidal fruiting cones. Alnus japonica can tolerate strong winds but not maritime exposure, and it requires moist or wet soil. It is hardy to zone 4, and it can grow in heavy clay and nutritionally poor soils. This tree can fix nitrogen and prefers medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. It can grow in semi-shade or full sun, making it an excellent choice for landscaping.
