Acer henryi, also known as Henry's Maple, is a stunning broadleaf deciduous tree or large shrub that can grow up to 30 feet tall and wide. Its smooth olive-green bark complements its bronze-colored leaves that transform into vibrant shades of green, red, and yellow in the fall. The tree's shoots are slightly tomentose and brownish-green, and its new growth is reddish. Its leaves are compound with three elliptic leaflets measuring between 5-10 cm long, serrate or entire and bluish green to olive green in color. The petiole is around 10 cm long, and the juvenile leaves are coarsely serrate, similar to those of A. cissifolium. Acer henryi is native to China's central provinces of Hubei and Sichuan, where it is commonly found.
ACER henryi thrives in both sun and shade and has proven hardy to USDA Zone 6, surviving winter temperatures as low as -24o F without injury. The tree is named after Augustine Henry, who discovered it during his time serving as a doctor in China. Henry was an avid plant collector who sent specimens he collected back home to Ireland, and later became a forestry expert, co-authoring "The Trees of Great Britain and Ireland."
Consider adding the ACER henryi to your landscape if you are looking for a small, spreading tree with smooth olive-green bark that offers stunning fall color. This tree is perfect for adding unique texture and color to your garden while also being easy to care for and resistant to cold temperatures.
