Viburnum nudum, also known as Possum-haw Viburnum or Smooth Witherod, is a hardy deciduous shrub that is native to the eastern and southeastern United States. This versatile plant can grow up to 10 feet in height and width, forming a spreading rounded crown that is covered in lustrous dark green leaves. In late spring, it produces creamy white flowers that give way to a breathtaking fruit display in late summer. The immature green berries transform into shades of pink, blue, and purplish black, creating colorful clusters that are more striking than Donny Osmond's dreamcoat! While this shrub is drought-tolerant and requires little care once established, it prefers moist, well-drained soil and partial shade. It is not suitable for chalky or alkaline soils but can thrive in hardiness zones 5 to 9. This attractive and underutilized shrub is a must-have for any garden that values beauty, versatility, and ease of maintenance.
