Syringa josikaea, also known as Hungarian Lilac, is a beautiful and hardy deciduous shrub native to central and eastern Europe. Growing up to a height of 6-12 ft, this plant bears dark pink tubular flowers with a strong fragrance, which bloom in early summer in slender panicles up to 15cm long. It is very tolerant of trimming and makes an excellent hedging plant. This species of lilac prefers cool to temperate climates and is fully frost hardy, growing well in full sun to semi-shade. Despite its continental European origin, it has proved to be successfully cultivated in the oceanic extremes of northwestern Europe on the Faroe Islands and in arctic northern Norway north to Kirkenes. If you're a lover of lilacs and looking for a stunning and hardy addition to your garden, Syringa josikaea is an excellent choice.
