Spiraea japonica, also known as Japanese Meadowsweet or Japanese Spiraea, is a deciduous, perennial shrub native to Japan, China, and Korea. It is a very ornamental plant, with clusters of rosy-pink flowers at the tips of wiry, freely branching, erect stems. This plant can be grown as a low hedge or ground cover, and tolerates most soils, but prefers a good loamy soil, abundant moisture and full sunlight. It is hardy to about -20°C and can even succeed in part shade. Spiraea japonica is a polymorphic species, and it hybridizes freely with other members of the genus. This plant was introduced to North America as an ornamental landscape plant in the 1870s, and has since naturalized throughout much of the Northeast, Southeast, and Midwest areas of the United States, as well as in parts of Canada. Despite its beauty, Spiraea japonica has also been used as traditional medicine by native people, and extracts from the plant have been found to be bioactive. Consider adding this gorgeous and multi-functional plant to your garden or landscape.
