Sorbus alnifolia Korean Mountain Ash is a versatile medium-sized deciduous tree, growing up to 10-20m tall with a grey bark. The tree has a columnar or conic crown in young trees, which becomes rounded with age, and slender branches that angle upwards. The leaves are green above and thinly hairy with white hairs beneath, with serrated margins and an acute apex, and turn orange-pink to red in autumn. In May, the tree produces white flowers in flat-topped clusters, followed by small, 1/2" fruit that ripens from mid-autumn. The fruit is pinkish, orangish, red, or scarlet, and can be eaten raw or cooked, with a reasonably mild and mealy flavor. This tree is native to central China, Korea, and Japan and its fruit is perhaps the handsomest of all mountain ash for fruit effect. Sorbus alnifolia Korean Mountain Ash prefers light, medium or heavy soil, as well as acid, neutral or alkaline soils, and can grow in semi-shade or no shade. It requires moist soil and can tolerate strong winds. This tree is an excellent choice for a beautiful and useful addition to your garden.
