Discover Shepherdia canadensis, also known as Canada Buffaloberry, Russet Buffaloberry, Soopolallie, Soapberry, or Foamberry. This deciduous shrub is native throughout North America and bears edible red or yellow berries that have an extremely bitter taste. The fruit is traditionally dried and used like currants and became a favourite treat of Native American Indians. The berries were beaten until a foam with a consistency of beaten eggs was formed and then flavoured with sweet food, such as cooked quamash bulbs or other fruit. The Canada Buffaloberry is a great shrub for dry, salty, high-pH soils, such as along highways, and grows up to 13 ft. Explore the unique flavors and properties of this shrub that has been used for generations.
