Sapium sebiferum is also known as the Chinese tallow tree, Florida aspen, and Gray Popcorn Tree. Originally from eastern Asia, this tree is most commonly associated with China, Taiwan, and Japan. The waxy coating on the seed makes it ideal for candle and soap making, as well as for cloth dressing and fuel. Additionally, the leaves are used to treat boils and are rich in tannin, which can be used to obtain a black dye. Despite its toxic reputation, the leaves and roots are depurative, diuretic, and laxative and can be used to treat various conditions such as oedema, constipation, and skin diseases. The wood is light and soft and is excellent for carving, furniture building, and incense, as well as fuel. It is an invasive species that can outcompete native plants and reduce biodiversity. It is a fast-growing tree that produces large numbers of seeds, which are easily dispersed by wind and water. We recommend using caution if planting this seed. Keep in mind these can be bought not for growing purposes.
