Rosa xanthina, also known as Manchu Rose or Yellow Rose, is a fascinating species of rose that boasts an abundance of musky-smelling yellow flowers and interesting red hips in autumn. Unlike many hybrid roses on the market today, wild roses like this one are known for their excellent resistance to diseases and insects. This shrub grows 6-9 feet tall, with reddish stems armed with reddish-brown thorns. Semi-double yellow flowers (up to 2 inches in diameter) bloom for several weeks from late April into May, emitting a delightful fragrance. The flowers are followed by attractive spherical to ellipsoid red hips that mature in late summer and persist on the shrub throughout winter. While foliage typically produces insignificant fall color, occasionally an interesting blend of yellow, orange, and red will occur. This rose is well worth growing in a large yard or garden and adds a touch of unique beauty to any landscape. More information on this fascinating specimen can be found on the USDA website.
