Native to eastern Asia, this scrambling shrub produces fragrant white to pink flowers in large corymbs and reddish to purple hips. Its dense and sturdy habit makes it an excellent hedge, and its extensive root system is suited for soil stabilization. Its root contains 23-25% tannin, and an essential oil extracted from fresh flowers is used in cosmetics. While it is grown as an ornamental plant, it is also used as a rootstock for grafted rose cultivars. Its hips are even edible!
