Rhus punjabensis, commonly known as Punjab Sumac, is a deciduous tree that grows up to 12 meters tall and is hardy to zone 6. It is not frost tender and blooms in June. The flowers are dioecious, meaning that only one sex is found on any one plant, so both male and female plants must be grown if seed is required. The plant prefers well-drained soil and can grow in light, medium, and heavy soils. It prefers moist soil and cannot grow in the shade. An oil is extracted from the seeds, which is used to make candles due to its tallow-like consistency. This versatile plant can be grown in acid, neutral, and basic (alkaline) soils and is pollinated by bees. Learn more about the Punjab Sumac on plants.usda.gov.
