Rhodotypos scandens, also known as jetbead, is a beautiful and hardy deciduous shrub with a loose, mounding habit. Native to Japan and China, this shrub produces 2" white, four-petaled flowers in late spring, followed by 1/3" hard shiny black seeds that last through winter. Its leaves are doubly serrate and ovate-acute, measuring 3-6cm long and 2-4cm broad with a serrated margin. The plant can grow up to 2-5m tall with opposite leaves and 4-petaled flowers, that are unusual traits for a Rosaceae species. Jetbead is an excellent choice for gardens and landscaping projects as it is easy to maintain and adds ornamental value to any landscape. Please note that it is an invasive species in some parts of eastern North America.
