The Quercus oglethorpensis Oglethorpe Oak is a breathtaking, endangered tree species found in the Piedmont of Georgia and South Carolina, as well as Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. The average tree grows to 25 meters in height, with a diameter at breast height of 80cm. Its light gray scaly bark resembles that of white oak or post oak. The Oglethorpe Oak is named after Oglethorpe County, Georgia, where it was first discovered. This deciduous tree inhabits poorly drained alluvial sites with other bottomland hardwoods and is often found along roadsides and old fence rows. Unfortunately, the species is endangered mostly due to habitat loss. The yellow-green, leathery leaves are 5-13cm in length and 1.5-5.0cm in width, elliptic to obovate, smooth on the upper surface and felty on the undersurface. The tree's acorns are a dull reddish-brown color and produced from September to October, with the cup covering one-third to one-half of the acorn.
