This species of cherry tree is native to North America, and can be found from Newfoundland all the way to the Rocky Mountains. Pin cherry is known for its fine-textured, bright red branches, flat-topped clusters of white flowers, and bright red fruit. Its fall foliage is also colorful. Pin cherry is often called Fire Cherry because its seedlings come up after forest fires. This fast-growing tree has a lifespan of only 20 to 40 years and can be used for fuel and pulpwood. Its cherries are made into jelly and are also consumed by wildlife. While not commonly used for lumber, Pin cherry is well adapted to intensive management and chip harvesting for fiber and fuel.
