Discover Pinus sylvestris, or Scots Pine, an evergreen coniferous tree native to Europe & Asia. This unique tree is renowned for being the only pine indigenous to Northern Europe. Widely introduced to North America around 1600, the Scots Pine is exceptionally adaptable to various soils.
This tree showcases majestic growth, reaching up to 75 ft in height along with a trunk diameter of 3 ft at maturity. The Scots Pine boasts a unique appearance, characterized by a long, straight trunk crowned by a flat mass of foliage. Make note of the leaves or 'needles', gleaming in a glaucous blue-green shade that deepens during winter. Young trees sprout longer leaves in bundles, accompanied by a grey sheath at the base.
Scots Pine’s distinctive orange-red bark sets it apart, as does the attractive, globose seed cones that turn from red to brown within the first year. This hardy, high-altitude mountain tree possesses an incredible lifespan of 150-300 years, with some identified specimens in Sweden surpassing a staggering 700 years.
Used extensively in forestry, the Scots Pine's wood is employed for sawn timber and pulp.
