Pinus serotina, also known as Pond Pine, Marsh Pine, or Pocosin Pine, is a tree found throughout the southeastern Atlantic coastal plain of the United States. This tree can grow up to 60 ft tall and has a unique, crooked growth pattern and irregular top. Its needles are 15-20cm long and grow in bundles of three or four. The cones are small and round, take 2 years to mature, and require fire to open and release seeds. Pond Pine is found in wet habitats near ponds, bays, swamps, and pocosins, and is a major species in the forest cover type Pond Pine. The climate in its range is mild and humid, making it an ideal tree for this region. Red heart disease, a white rot fungus that affects the value of the wood, is a serious issue for pond pine. This unique tree is a beautiful addition to any landscape and a valuable part of the ecosystem.
