Pinus palustris, commonly known as the Longleaf Pine or Southern Yellow Pine, is a native tree species of the southeastern United States. This pine is found along the coastal plain from eastern Texas to southeast Virginia, extending into northern and central Florida. It is well-known for its use as a source of pulp, timber, and turpentine but is also valuable for adding texture and unique architecture to coastal landscapes. The Longleaf Pine can reach a height of 30-35 m and a diameter of 0.7 m, taking 100-150 years to reach full size and may live up to 500 years. Longleaf pine forests are rich in biodiversity, providing habitat for many species of plants and animals. Due to deforestation and overharvesting, only about 3% of the original Longleaf Pine forest remains, but efforts are being made to restore the ecosystem within its natural range. The Longleaf Pine is the official state tree of Alabama and is recognized as a cultural symbol of the southern United States.
