Discover the unique beauty of the Pinus monophylla, also known as the Single-leaf Pinyon Pine. This small to medium-sized tree is native to the United States and northwest Mexico, and can be found in a range of southernmost Idaho to northern Baja California. With its mostly single needle pairs and round needles, the Single-leaf Pinyon Pine is the world's only 1-needled pine. Its edible seeds, or pine nuts, are collected throughout its range and are an important food and cultural symbol for Native American tribes. Unfortunately, many Pinyon groves were destroyed during the mid-19th century, but conservation efforts are now underway to preserve and protect this valuable species. In addition to its cultural significance, the Pinus monophylla is also a popular ornamental tree, perfect for drought-tolerant and wildlife gardens. Discover the beauty and uniqueness of the Single-leaf Pinyon Pine for yourself.
