Looking for a strikingly attractive evergreen tree for your garden? Meet Picea breweriana, also known as Brewer Spruce, Brewer's Spruce or Weeping Spruce. Native to the Klamath Mountains of southwest Oregon and northwest California, it is one of the rarest species in western North America, endemic to high altitudes of 1000-2700m. It is a slow-growing tree that matures to 20-40 meters tall, exceptionally 54 meters, with a distinct crown of horizontal branches with drooping branchlets that form curtains of foliage up to 7-8ft long. The bark is pinkish-gray and the cones are pendulous, cylindrical, and longer than most other North American spruces. Picea breweriana copes well with heavy snow and ice loads, shedding snow with its tough branches and drooping branchlets. This species is highly valued as an ornamental tree in Great Britain and Scandinavia, appreciated for its dramatically pendulous foliage. Plant it in your garden and enjoy its unique beauty for many years to come.
