It primarily inhabits wetlands such as swamps, marshes, low pinewoods, and savannas. The plant can grow up to 15-20 meters in height and has leaves that are ovate to elliptic in shape, dense and pubescent when young, and lustrous and green when mature. The Swamp Bay has been classified as a separate species from the Redbay and belongs to the Lauraceae family. It is available for commercial purposes as a nursery stock.
