Penthorum sedoides, also known as Ditch Stonecrop or Virginia Stonecrop, is a perennial forb native to the eastern United States and Canada. It produces small white flowers in summer and can grow up to 80cm tall. The plant is widely distributed in the US and Canada and can be found in alluvial swamps, floodplain pools, rocky or sandy shores, fens, marshes, beaver ponds, and disturbed wetlands. The cooked leaves are edible and can be used as a potherb. The plant has medicinal properties and is used as a tincture for catarrhal problems, diarrhoea, haemorrhoids, and infantile cholera. The seeds have also been used to make cough syrups. Suitable for waterside or shallow water, Penthorum sedoides is an easy-to-grow plant that can be propagated by seed or division in the spring.
