This species has an extensive wild range, from Russia to Central Asia, and is closely related to P. veitchii. Unlike many garden plants, these peonies are rarely troubled by browsing deer or rabbits. P. anomala requires well-drained soil and does well in full sun or partial shade. It typically produces only one fully developed flower per stem, which appears in early summer and smells delightful.
