Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours

Stratification: cold stratify for 60 days

Germination: can be sown in fall or spring, sow seed 1/4" deep, tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed, remove mulch upon germination, keep moist

Ostrya virginiana, also known as American Hophornbeam, is a graceful tree native to eastern North America. The tree's dark green leaves turn yellow in the fall, making for a stunning display. While the crown may be less symmetrical than other species, it is slow-growing and its bark yields a very hard wood that is used for making tool handles, fence posts, and more. This resilient wood is close-grained, very hard, very strong, and durable. The tree's hop-like fruit clusters are an additional unique feature. American Hophornbeam is also grown as an ornamental plant and used as a street tree. The buds and catkins are an important source of winter food for some birds, most notably the Ruffed Grouse. Despite not being large enough to be used commercially, this tree is a valuable resource locally for posts, mallets, and applications where resistance to wear is essential.
