Mimulus ringens, also known as Allegheny monkeyflower or square-stemmed monkeyflower, is a native perennial plant found in eastern and central North America. This plant grows in a variety of wet habitats and features asymmetrical, two-lipped, blue-purple flowers that resemble a monkey's face. It can grow from 20cm to well over a meter tall, and its stem is usually erect with lance-shaped, up to 8cm long leaves that may clasp the stem. The flower has a tubular base encapsulated in a ribbed calyx with pointed lobes and is divided into an upper lip and a larger, swollen lower lip. Mimulus ringens thrives in moist to wet soils in full sun to part shade. It naturalizes in optimum growing conditions by self-seeding and creeping rhizomes and is best naturalized in moist to wet soils in water gardens, bog gardens, wet meadows, water margins or low spots. This plant attracts bees and hummingbirds and is deer tolerant. It is perfect for planting in water features, rain gardens, or any wet area in the landscape. Order now and enjoy the lovely blue-purple monkey-like flowers in your garden!
