"Malus sargentii, also known as Sargent's Apple or Sargent's Crab Apple, is the smallest crab apple variety. This deciduous shrub, native to Japan, forms a dense and rounded shape. It can reach a height of 6 to 8 feet and a spread of 9 to 15 feet. In April, it produces fragrant pale pink buds that open to reveal half-inch white flowers. The flowers are followed by dark red fruits, which are about the size of a small pea, and are a good food source for wildlife, especially birds.

This shrub is best grown in loamy, well-drained, acidic soil in full sun, although it can adapt to a wide range of soils. It is relatively low-maintenance and requires medium watering. Pruning should be done in May to early June, after flowering but before the formation of flower buds for the following year.

Sargent's Apple is commonly grown as a dense and spreading shrub, although it can also be grown as a dwarf tree. Its flowers bloom profusely in spring but typically only every other year. The flowers are followed by long-lasting and attractive red crabapples. The leaves of this shrub are dark green and turn yellow in the autumn, creating a beautiful contrast with the fruit. It is also worth noting that this plant is listed by the Royal Horticultural Society as synonymous with Malus toringo subsp. sargentii.

This variety of crab apple is generally resistant to diseases, although it may be susceptible to minor issues such as apple scab, leaf spot, and fire blight. In terms of potential pests, Sargent's Apple is relatively low in concern, although it may attract tent caterpillars, aphids, Japanese beetles, borers, spider mites, and scale.

Sargent's Apple is a versatile shrub that can be used as a small specimen or in groups, near fences, in borders, or as a screen or hedge. However, due to its alternate year bloom, it may not be suitable for smaller gardens. It is hardy in zones 4 to 7 and can grow in heavy clay soil, in semi-shade or no shade, as long as the soil remains moist. This shrub is also known for its edible fruit, which can be enjoyed raw or cooked. Overall, Sargent's Apple is a beautiful and functional addition to any garden."
