Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours

Stratification: cold stratify for 120 days

Germination: can be sown outdoors in the fall for spring germination, sow seed 1/2" deep, keep moist, mulch the seed bed, remove mulch upon germination

Sweetbay Magnolia is distributed across much of the southeastern United States but it is most common in the coastal plain region from Maryland along the coast to Florida, and the coast of the Gulf of Mexico west through Texas. It occurs in wetland habitats ranging from seasonally flooded cypress swamps to shallow water in bays and estuaries, and in terrestrial forests that are periodically flooded. As such, it is most commonly associated with nonforested wetlands. However, the species demonstrates considerable ecological amplitude, occurring in upland forests and dry pine-oak sandhills, particularly in the Florida panhandle, and occasionally in rocky wooded bluffs of the Appalachian Mountains. The species is often found in large stands, and while it does not appear to be threatened at present, there is some concern about the degradation of swamps and wetland forests throughout its range.
