The Lonicera maackii 'Rem Red' Amur Honeysuckle is a stunning deciduous shrub native to temperate Asia, known for its bright red to black semi-translucent berries that provide a great winter food source. This plant was originally developed by the USDA Soil Conservation Service in the 1960s for wildlife and erosion control. However, it has since been determined to be very invasive and is being eradicated in many places. The 'Rem Red' cultivar has an erect habit and is ideal for use in home gardens as an ornamental plant or hedge. Its attractive flowers are produced in pairs, densely clustered together and range from white to yellow and orange in color. This plant is relatively fast-growing and prefers shady habitats such as forests, neglected urban areas, and fence rows. However, it can form extremely dense thickets and has become an important invasive species in New Zealand and the eastern United States. While its red berries are mildly poisonous to humans and should not be consumed, children can enjoy the sweet nectar found inside the flowers.
