Lobelia cardinalis, commonly known as Cardinal Flower, is a species of Lobelia that is native to the Americas - extending from southeastern Canada all the way to northern Colombia. Highly ornamental, this plant is celebrated for its vibrant red flowers that bloom in mid-summer. Cardinal Flower can grow approximately 2-3 ft tall, particularly when in flower, and it is found flourishing in wet areas, such as streambanks and swamps. Strikingly, the flowers of this plant are deeply five-lobed and can be up to 1.5 inches across. Cardinal Flowers prefer moist soils and partial shade, and can even thrive in heavy clay soils or standing water.
