Lobelia cardinalis, commonly known as Cardinal Flower, is a species of Lobelia that is native to the Americas - extending from southeastern Canada all the way to northern Colombia. Highly ornamental, this plant is celebrated for its vibrant red flowers that bloom in mid-summer. Cardinal Flower can grow approximately 2-3 ft tall, particularly when in flower, and it is found flourishing in wet areas, such as streambanks and swamps. Strikingly, the flowers of this plant are deeply five-lobed and can be up to 1.5 inches across. Cardinal Flowers prefer moist soils and partial shade, and can even thrive in heavy clay soils or standing water. Despite its beauty, this plant, like other members of the Lobelia genus, is considered potentially toxic if consumed in large quantities. Become mesmerized by this charming and exotic addition to your garden that is sure to stand out with its resplendent red flowers.
