The Iris douglasiana, also known as Douglas iris, is an evergreen perennial that is a common wildflower in the coastal regions of Northern and Central California and southern Oregon. This attractive plant grows from a rhizome and produces purplish-blue, white, or yellow flowers from April to June. It typically grows below 100 meters in grasslands near the coast and can tolerate dry or wet soils. Its leaves are about 2 centimeters wide and its stems can reach up to 80 centimeters tall. While it is regarded as a noxious weed in pastures, it has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. This highly variable species hybridizes freely with other species, making it even more interesting for gardeners and botanists alike. Experience the beauty of the Douglas iris and brighten up your garden with this stunning wildflower.
