The Hesperocyparis sempervirens 'Stricta', also known as Italian Cypress or Columnar Italian Cypress, is a popular evergreen tree native to the Eastern Mediterranean region. This narrow, strictly erect tree can reach heights of 40 to 60 feet but rarely extends beyond 3 feet wide. The gray-green, scale-like leaves grow upward and form on the tiny branches from the ground to the top of the tree. The fruit is a small oval berry, dry, and brown in color. This tree has a long history in Greco and Italian gardens, where it was planted extensively in the cities. Besides its ornamental use, the Italian Cypress is also an essential oil source used in perfumery and soap making. Its durable and fragrant wood is popular for building uses, cabinet making, and wardrobes, especially since it repels moths and is impervious to woodworm. If you're looking for a tree to frame formal landscapes or as an accent around taller buildings, the Hesperocyparis sempervirens 'Stricta' is an excellent choice.
