Euscaphis japonica (also goes by Staphylea japonica), also known as Korean Sweetheart Tree, is a small deciduous tree or shrub that can add beauty to your garden. Its bark is grayish-brown and striped, while its leaves have pale green rachises that are 12-32 cm long. This tree is common in thickets and thin secondary forests in lowlands and low mountains of central and southern Japan. The red seed pods of the Euscaphis japonica are brilliant and open to reveal shiny black seeds that make for a stunning sight. This tree can be grown as a small ornamental tree and adds charm and character to any space. Its inflorescence is a terminal panicle, up to 21 cm, and its flowers are small and yellowish-white, approximately 4-5 mm in diameter. Despite its unpleasant odor when crushed, the Euscaphis japonica is a beautiful tree that can add color and vibrancy to your garden. Get your own Euscaphis japonica seeds and grow this beauty for your outdoor space. Seeds have a double dormancy so patience is key with getting this species to germinate!
